Two mechanisms for channel access : contention based and contention free.
contention-based access allows devices to access the channel in a distributed fashion using a CSMA-CA backoff algorithm.
Contention-free access is controlled entirely by the PAN coordinator through the use of GTS.
1. Superframe Structure
A coordinator on a PAN can optionally bound its channel time using a superframe structure. A superframe is bounded
by the transmission of a beacon frame and can have an active portion and an inactive portion.The coordinator may enter a low-power(sleep) mode during the inactive portion.

Four frame types are defined : beacon, data, acknowledgment, and MAC command.

Standar IEEE 802.15.4 mendefinisikan empat struktur frame :
1. beacon frame : digunakan oleh kordinator untuk mengirim beacon
2. data frame : digunakan untuk mengirim data
3. acknowledgment frame : digunakan untuk konfirmasi bahwa frame data telah sukses diterima
4. MAC command frame : digunakan untuk mengontrol entitas MAC,menyediakan mekanisme untuk mengontrol dan konfigurasi node client.

Format superframe didefinisikan oleh kordinator. Superframe dibatasi oleh beacons yang dikirim oleh kordinator dan
dibagi dalam 16 slot yang berukuran sama (termasuk satu slot untuk beacon). Superframe dapat mempunyai active dan inactive portion. Selama inactive portion, kordinator masuk dalam mode low-power untuk menghemat energi. Frame beacon dikirim di slot pertama setiap superframe. Jika kordinator tidak ingin menggunakan struktur superframe, kordinator akan mematikan pengiriman beacon.
